World Water Day: water can be used to achieve sustainable peace in
communities – Victor Nyoroh
As the world marked World Water Day on Friday, The Africa Director for The
Vincent International Network for Justice, Peace and Integrity Creation (VIN-JPIC), Rev. Fr. Bar. Victor Nyoroh has emphasized on the importance of water to the pursuance of peace in communities and the country at large.
World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to Galadimawa community under the
Abuja Municipal Area Council, (AMAC), to mark the day, Rev Fr. Nyoroh
who led other partners to the community, pointed out that water plays
a critical role in safeguarding against natural disasters, bolstering education, enhancing living standards, generating employment opportunities, propelling economic development, and supporting a vast array of ecosystem services, adding that it is through these comprehensive benefits that water becomes a cornerstone for peace and prosperity.
Responding, the Chief of Galadimawa, Tanko Zhimiko, while commending
the team for the visit, lamented the challenges people of Galadimawa
are facing as a result of lack of water.
According to him, all efforts made by authorities to connect the community to Lower Usuma Dam had yielded no result adding that the few boreholes owned by private owners is not enough for residents, just as the majority of the residents depend on water vendors which do not come cheaply.
He appealed to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, AMAC Chairman,
Christopher Maikalangu and other concerned authorities to intervene in
the issue.
Similarly, the District Head of Galadimawa, and a retired Police
Officer, Musa Barde said the visit was apt as it provided an avenue for Galadimawa people to express their voice by demanding for a better
standard of living through clean and potable water.
He also reaffirmed the community’s commitment to help the administration fight crime.
Highlight of the visit was the distribution of free clean and potable water to residents of the community.
Meanwhile, other partners who formed part of the visit included Drum
Majors for Peace led by Amb. Nsikan Paul, PIB Global Services Ltd as well as International Food Heroes Agency (IFHA) and ONOME FOOD MARKET#
