Societies are stronger when human rights are respected – Akase
On December 10 every year, Human Rights Day is celebrated globally, as proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in its Charter on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
As the comity of nations commemorate the Day this year, a 2023 governorship aspirant in Benue State, Mr Terver Akase says societies and its institutions are made stronger, when human rights are mutually respected by all.
He statestrons that for a just society to emerge there is a compelling need for fundamental rights of all citizens to be respected across the continents, noting that the global enunciation of human rights remains a major achievement of the United Nations that must be upheld by all nations.
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP 2023 guber hopeful acknowledges as strategic and apt, this year’s Human Rights Day theme which is: “Equality: Reducing Inequalities and Advancing Human Rights”, saying inequalities must be adequately tackled to create a fairer society.
He expresses worry over the continued violation of citizens’ human rights, especially by public institutions that ought to have been promoting the respect for the rights of citizens. He calls for urgent measures to be put in place to curb the growing trend for social justice to thrive.
Mr Akase emphasizes that finding solutions for deep-rooted forms of socio-political inequalities that have affected the most vulnerable people in societies, including women and girls, and people with disabilities, among others can only be achieved when gross violation of human rights is curbed.
He adds that we must take steps to close inequality gaps in order to build a world that is better, more resilient, and more sustainable.
