Robbers Raid The Pioneer Newspaper Premises, Murder Security Staff
Akwa Ibom Newspaper Corporation (AKNC) was in the early hours of Saturday thrown into mourning following the death of one of its security staff on duty who was killed by a gang of robbers who raided the premises and carted away valuable property worth millions of Naira.
In a statement signed by the General Manager/Editor-in-Chief, Umoette Umoette, the robbers, who came in their numbers, were said to have invaded the Pioneer house between 9pm and 4am and took away one Lister generator, three split unit air conditioners, two flat screen plasma television sets, armoured and other internal electricity cables, car battery from the Corporations staff Toyota Hiace staff bus.
The robbers also broke into the Corporation’s Staff Canteen where they also carted away a plasma flat screen television set, gas cooker and cylinder.
The statement reads, “the slain security staff was among the three security guards who were on duty that fateful night.
“According to the two surviving security personnel, ‘the robbers arrived the premises at about 9 pm that fateful Friday, July 12, 2024, and manhandled them before tying their hands and legs with ropes, and covered their heads with sack bags, which they also tied to their necks with ropes to secure it in place.
“The robbers took time to ransack the premises during their operation, which lasted till 4am on Saturday, and made away with the above listed items.
“It was after the robbers had left that it was discovered that one of the three security personnel had died during the robbery operation
“The corpse of the deceased security staff had since been deposited in the mortuary, while the State Police Command has commenced investigations into the unfortunate incident”
