Police partner Journalists in Cross River on crime fighting
The Commissioner of Police Cross River State Command, CP. Aminu Hassan in collaboration with the newly elected officials of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Cross River State council had pledged to come into a partnership to fight crime in the state.
The duo gave the promise on Monday, 25th July 2022 at the Commissioner’s Office, Diamond Hill, Calabar when the newly elected chairman of the state Union, Comrade Nsa Gill led other elected officials accompanied by a few members for a courtesy call on the CP.
The chairman noted that the visit was to formally introduce the new executive and emphasized that for a crime-free society, all hands must be on deck, pledging the union’s commitment to continue to work with the police to ensure that the society is safe for all to live in peace and harmony.
Gill appealed for a more robust relationship that will bring mutual benefits for both bodies, especially now that social media platform is causing a lot of concentration in the media space, revealing that very soon the Union will commence a lot of workshops and seminars on responsible journalism.
He used the occasion to inform the commissioner of the NUJ Press Club which is soon to take off, requesting the Police commissioner to get ready for his investiture as Patron at the appropriate time.
According to Gill, “We have come here today to familiarise ourselves with you and to reiterate our continuous support in assisting in the fight against crimes, by ensuring that objectivity is maintained in our reportage. We appeal for a more robust relationship that will bring mutual benefits”.
Earlier in his remarks, CP Al Hassan commended the chairman and members of the union for the visit, pointing out that the press was a vital organ for success in crime fighting.
The police commissioner noted that he has so fast enjoyed a smooth working relationship with the media, expressing the belief that the new leadership will sustain the same.
He promised to work for hand in hand with the media to ensure that crime is brought to a minimum level and to give the necessary support to journalists in course of their constitutional duties.
CP Al Hassan also called for the creation of a police media forum where there can be a periodic interface between the media and the police, pledging total cooperation with the NUJ.
