“No Previous President Supports Sports Than Tinubu” – Minister of Sport Development
The Minister for Sports Development, Senator John Owan-Enoh, says no previous President in the country has supported sports development than President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Senator Enoh expressed his optimism that the recent approval of payment for the backlog of outstandings for the national teams and coaches by the federal government will motivate the Super Eagles to perform well at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking during a thanksgiving service held in his honor over weekend in his home town, Ikom LGA of Cross River State, the Minister commended the President for his unprecedented commitment to sports development in Nigeria. According to Senator Owan-Enoh, no previous president has shown such a high level of support for sports.
The approval of N12 billion ($30 million) backlog of outstandings is indeed a significant milestone for Nigerian sports. The payment will cover the allowances and bonuses owed to various national teams and their coaches, which had accumulated over the years. This development has been widely welcomed by athletes and sports enthusiasts across the country.
For the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s national football team, the financial boost couldn’t have come at a more crucial time. As the team prepares for the upcoming AFCON tournament, morale and motivation are vital factors that can make a difference on the pitch. With the long-overdue payment finally being fulfilled, the players are expected to be more motivated and determined to give their best performance in the tournament.
The Super Eagles, being one of Africa’s most successful national football teams, carry the hopes and dreams of millions of Nigerians. Their success on the international stage has always been a source of pride for the nation. Therefore, the government’s commitment to clearing the backlog of outstandings sends a positive message to the players, coaches, and fans alike.
Senator Owan-Enoh expressed his gratitude to the President for his unwavering support and commitment to sports development in the country. He also emphasized the need for continued investment in sports, as it has the potential to not only bring joy to millions but also generate significant economic gains for the nation.
The senior team national coach has not been paid for 15 months. The senior national team and other national teams; females under 20 had a backlog of unpaid allowances, unpaid promises, and all of that piling up close to about N12 billion. The president has approved all of that payment.
“There’s no better way to show support and leadership than what he has done. I believe this should spur up our sports men and women, including the Super Eagles.
“President Tinubu is committed to returning joy and happiness to Nigerian homes because when we win our matches and ultimately the AFCON trophy, there’ll be happiness spread across the land,” he stated,
He said, “Every step you take is controversial,” but to the glory of God, I’m able to navigate through that and we are not in any controversy. We are committed to making a mark in sports development.” Enoh stressed.
