New poor: Echoes of 2020 NUJ Press Week
The COVID-19 era will continue to change the rules of engagement in the society asswell asathe scenes of the world.
But the greatest fear emerging from post COVID-19 era is the new normal codenamed the new poor, the biting economic hardship accasioned by the aftermath of the pandemic where even the rich would be forced to readjust their soci-economic lifestyles to cope with the economic downturn.
To brace up for the challenge, there is need for people from all walks of life and organisations to take concerted efforts to develop their capacity and update themselves socially, economically and psychologically.
This was the consensus at the opening ceremony of 2020 Press Week of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Council, held at NUJ Press Centre, Uyo on Monday.
The Keynote speaker, Hon Eseme Eyibo, who kick-started the discussion, harped on building human capacity and mindset as opposed to strong institutions given the present economic situation.
Eyibo advocatef divsersification from reliance on crude oil into the Blue Economy: utilising value in marine genetic resources.
He therefore challenged the people, particularly mefme practitioners to reposition themselves for opportunities in Ibom Deep Seaport by acquiring knowledge and skills relevant in the area.
Declaring the Week open, the governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel pledged his administration’s commitment towards supporting every move aimed at making Akwa Ibom people self-reliant in line with the Dakkada Philosophy.
Represented by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Comrade Ini Ememobong, Governor Udom Emmanuel noted Nigeria becomes stronger as a nation state when its citizens are empowered and sued for collaborative efforts from all and sundries.
“You cannot blame who you haven’t empowered,” Governor Udom Emmanuel.
