New Paramount Ruler for Calabar South Local Government emerges after over 20-years
The ten Clans that make up the Calabar South Local Government Area after more than two decades have decided to come together to elect of one them, former Clan Head, Ewa Nsa Royal House, His Royal Highness Etubom Nyong Effiom Okon as the new Paramount Ruler of the Calabar South Local Government.
The event took place on Friday, 22nd, July 2022 at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs, More Road, Calabar, Cross River State.
Addressing the Journalists just before the event, the Paramount Ruler of Bakassi local government area and chairman of the Cross River State Traditional Rulers Council, Dr Edet Okon Etim, says, “In the selection of Paramount ruler it is stipulated in the law that the Clan heads must be present in the presence of government officials to carry out the selection whereas In the selection of the Clan heads government has no business there.
“This means they can enter a small room or shrine and make their selections. Therefore, government wish to make it clear that, in line with the provision of the law government is interested in the selection of the Paramount ruler of a local government.
“”Our law also states that in every local government area there shall be a paramount ruler, exception of the Municipal council.
“”As a government, therefore, we are trying to strengthen the issue of selecting a paramount ruler of our local government areas” HRM stressed.
In his remarks, the newly elected Paramount ruler of Calabar South Local Government council, who is also the former Clan head of Ewa Nsa Royal House, Etubom Nyong Effiom Okon.
Says, “As you use to know my name is the Royal Highness Etubom Nyong Effiom Okon. Today, I am not Royal Highness Etubom Nyong Effiom Okon again. Today I have been made The Royal Majesty Etubom Nyong Effiom Okon, The Paramount Ruler of Calabar South Local Government area.
I have so many things to say but today I will say a little, I want to promise my people, that in my local government, I pledge that I will strive within my power to make sure that somewhat peace reigns in our local government. I want to do everything within my power to ensure that I work hand in hand with the government for us to restore peace”
I am not also struggling with this position as you know about 27 years ago we do not have a Paramount ruler in Calabar. That was why we took Chieftaincy Affairs to the court, which case we won. In this case, we needed them to summon the meeting for the Clan heads to select one of their own to become a Paramount ruler according to the edict of Cross River State. So today they have fulfilled the promise. They called all of us and they selected me as one of them to become the Paramount ruler in Calabar South” said the new Monarch.
