Jesus Christ is God
Almost everybody believes that Jesus is Lord. In all the letters of Apostle Paul, Jesus is addressed as Lord (Romans 16:24; Philemon 1:25). Christ said this of Himself: “You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am” (John 13:13). Jesus was made Christ and Lord (Acts 2:36). However, people do not easily see Christ as God. Is Jesus Christ God? Passages of the Bible say yes, He is God! Let us consider some of these passages:
“Looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). Jesus is here described as “our great God” whose second coming we are looking forward to anytime from now. Are you prepared for the second coming of Christ? Live a holy life (1 Peter 1:15-16). “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14).
Jesus Christ is the “true God and eternal life”. John wrote: “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life” (1 John 5:20). But, how are we in Him? “We are in Him who is true” through unfeigned faith (Ephesians 3:17).
“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory” (1 Timothy 3:16). “God was manifested in the flesh”. Who was the God that was manifested in the flesh? It was the Word who was with God at the beginning.
The Greek word for Word is LOGOS. “In the beginning was the Word (Logos), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God” (John 1:1-2). It was the Logos (Word) who was revealed in the flesh. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).
But, do we have multiple Gods? No! Jesus came in His Father’s name. “I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive” (John 5:43). Therefore to call Him God is appropriate, since He bears His Father’s name.
It was Jesus Christ, the Word (LOGOS), who was with God the Father in His pre-incarnate that incarnated and dwelt among us. Through Jesus Christ, we procure grace. “For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:17). The truth is God’s inspired written word. “Sanctify them by your truth. Your word is truth” (John 17:17). Jesus is the Christ. He is Lord and God.
