Ikot Ekpene Transition Chairman pays tribute to Nigerian fallen heroes
It was a moment for sober reflection as twenty-one gun salute were sounded in honour of the fallen heroes who paid the Supreme sacrifice for the unity of Nigeria, at Ikot Ekpene Cenotaph, today.
The display was performed to mark the grand finale of the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration.
The Chairman of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Transition Committee, Hon.(Sir.) John Cleton Etim, in his remarks noted that the Remembrance Day celebration was a reminder to Nigerians on the need to continue to strive together for peace, unity and progress of our dear nation.
He noted, that the celebration which is a National event is observed annually throughout the country as a mark of honour to our fallen heroes, and also provides an opportunity to extend goodwill to veterans and their families.
The Council Boss further acknowledged that Ikot Ekpene Local Government Transition Committee was aware of the contributions and support of the Legion over the years to the development of the Local Government Area, and pledged to work with the Legion in the Local Government to explore and utilize opportunities to meet some of the expectations of the veterans.
Hon. Etim had appreciated the people of Ikot Ekpene for their support and solidarity to the Transition Committee, even as he appealed for their continuous support and prayers. He was full of appreciation to the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, for his firm belief in grassroot development and support to the Transition Administration in the Local Government Areas.
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is set aside every year on the 15th of January to celebrate personnel of the Nigeria Army, Airforce, Navy and Police who fought gallantly to ensure global peace for the unity of our Country, Nigeria.
The event featured a line up activities including, Launching of Emblem and an inter- denominational Thanksgiving service.
Major activities to mark the day in Ikot Ekpene local government included laying of wreath, mounting of parade by members of the Legion and observation of a minute silence in honour of the fallen heroes.
