A former Military Administrator of Akwa Ibom State, Otuekong (Air Commodore) Idongesit Nkanga, Retd is dead.

He died of Covid-19 complications. According to family sources and other credible sources at the Covid-19 Isolation Centre, the Nsit Ibom born politician has been on life support for several days before his passage on Thursday.

TheMail Newspaper reported that Nkanga’s wife, Funmi; his  longstanding Personal Assistant, Wilson who is a retired agent of the country’s secret service and other members of the family have been quarantined.

“His kidney was totally down and he was on dialysis. Doctors were battling to salvage the situation but Covid-19 worsened his condition”, said one of our sources.

Nkanga, born January 27, 1952 was governor of Akwa Ibom from September 1990 to January 1992 during the regime of General Ibrahim Bangangida as Military Head of State.

In 2003, Nkanga contested for the governorship seat of Akwa Ibom State against Obong Victor Attah Attah under Nigeria Democratic Party (NDP).

The former commander of the Presidential Air Fleet was a serial governorship campaign Director General in the state.

He headed Chief Godswill Akpabio’s 2nd term campaign team while he also served in Governor Udom Emmanuel’s Divine Mandate (campaign organization) in both 2015 and 2019 governorship elections. Ahead of the 2023 governorship election, he was a strong advocate for a non-cultist emerging as Udom Emmanuel’s successor.

He has been actively involved in the development of Akwa Ibom (now Victor Attah) International Airport since 2007 where he was appointed Chairman of Akwa Ibom Airport Implementation Committee and later as Chairman of Ibom Airport Development Company Ltd.

Nkanga, an Elder of the Qua Iboe Church of Nigeria was the National Chairman, Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).
