Heavy flooding forecast: Akwa Ibom Governmen opens blocked Water channels
Following the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, ( NiMET) prediction on heavy flooding in various parts of the country, the Udom Emmanuel administration, as a responsive government, has since commenced process to avert flood menace by desilting blocked water channels and tunnels in different parts of the State.

However, checks reveal that, Akwa Ibom State government is one of the few States around the coastal zones of South South that is taking a proactive stand against floods by embarking on desilting, an action that would ameliorate the impact of losses as a result of disasters caused by floods.
The Chairman of the State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA), Obong Prince Ikim who spoke to newsmen while supervising the exercise on Thursday, said, the periodic exercise was part of measures by the Udom Emmanuel led government to permanently address flooding and related environmental issues in the State.
According to the Information Unit of AKSEPWMA, Prince Ikim disclosed that the ongoing exercise has witnessed massive desilting of major drains within the Uyo metropolis, revealing that the exercise will also be carried out in the hinterlands.
The AKSEPWMA boss, however, condemned the attitude of some residents that had turned the drains to dump sites, saying that every linking point was blocked by the refuse.
While commending the State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, for sustaining the proactive measures against flooding in the State, Ikim stressed the need for residents to change their attitude towards environmental sanitation.
He restated the commitment of the Udom Emmanuel administration towards good governance and enhancing the quality of life in the entire 31 Local Government Areas of the state.
