Food Sufficiency: Agric Commissioner solicits support of community leaders
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Offiong Offor has solicited the support of Community Leaders in the attainment of food sufficiency in the State.
Dr Offor made the plea, on Tuesday, while interacting with the Paramount Ruler of Oruk Anam Local Government Area, His Royal Majesty, John Obosi, the Clan Head of Ibesit, Obong Idorenyin Ebong and Community Leaders of Ntak Ibesit, Ata Ntak, Ikot Udo Awak, Ikot Esikam and Ikot Uko Etu at the Ministry’s Conference Hall, Uyo.
She noted that Akwa Ibom State Government is committed to ensuring food sufficiency, hence communities are expected to reciprocate this gesture by supporting the Agricultural policies of Governor Udom through their participation in practical agriculture.
The Commissioner, admonished them to uphold peaceful co-existence and guard against any case of communal disputes in their domains, as such would hinder agricultural development in the State.
The Don commended the communities for handing over a large parcel of land to the State Government for Agricultural Production and added that the donation was done willingly out of love.
While appreciating the Paramount Ruler for mediating between the community and the Ministry of Agriculture, the Don disclosed that Agricultural activities will soon continue on the parcel of land.
“The Governor is a lover of peace, so we do not want crisis. Where there is peace, growth abounds, where there is dispute development will be hindered. I urge you not to trespass on that land, but embrace peace and continually support the project” Offor stated.
In his remarks, the Paramount Ruler, Oruk Anam LGA, HRM John Obosi who expressed appreciation to the commissioner for the audience granted them, promised to maintain peace in the host Communities and support the project.
Obosi, appreciated the Honourable Commissioner for the choice of the community and also requested that youths of the area be engaged in the farm.
The meeting had in attendance the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Mary Bassey, Directors, Royal Fathers and others.
