Epic Battle: NUJ Withdraws Journalists from AKHA over appointment of non-professional as Press Secretary
The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in Akwa Ibom State has taken a decisive step by withdrawing journalists from covering the activities of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, AKHA.
The decision comes in response to the appointment of Mr Nkereuwem Udom, a non-journalist with no relevant academic background in journalism, as the Press Secretary and Head of Press Corps.
The NUJ reached the resolution during its State congress on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at the Press Centre in Uyo. The NUJ vehemently disapproves of such an appointment and has issued a strong warning that any union member who fails to comply with the withdrawal directive would face severe disciplinary measures.
The NUJ believes that the appointment poses a significant threat to the integrity of journalism and the indispensable role it plays in society. They argue that such a decision undermines the professionalism and expertise required for effectively discharging media duties.
In a communique signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Amos Etuk; the State Secretary, Comrade Dominic Akpan, the NUJ emphasized its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its members and upholding the credibility of journalism in Akwa Ibom State.
Others who endorsed the document were the Chairman, Communique Drafting Committee, Comrade Iniobong Ekponta; alongside the Secretary, Comrade Dianime Uko and a Member, Comrade Emem Okon.
Pundits believe that the withdrawal of journalists from covering the AKHA would have a profound impact on news coverage of the state legislature.
Stephen Abia, a lawyer who spoke with WatchmanPost said the action serves as a powerful statement, emphasizing the NUJ’s dedication to upholding the principles of journalism and ensuring transparency and accountability in governance.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the AKHA and other stakeholders will respond to the NUJ’s action.
The withdrawal of journalists raises serious concerns about access to information and the potential consequences for the relationship between the legislature and the media in Akwa Ibom State.
