Deplorable Road: 7 dead in Calabar-Itu Highway tanker accident
At least seven persons have been confirmed dead and dozen injured when a fatal road accident occurred on Monday morning along Calabar – Itu Highway involving a fuel tanker and two tricycles.
The incident took place along Ntak Inyang area of the highway, at the portion of the road which is currently being repaired by the state government after it was cut off by ravine encroachment with Niger Pet Construction firm handling the remedial work. Due to the repairs work the company had since closed one side of the road to traffic forcing all vehicles to ply just one lane of the highway.
According to information at the scene of the incident, some bystanders said the keke driver and the passengers including school children died in the accident.
Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in the state said it was gathering facts about the accident as the state Sector Commander, Oga Ochi, when contacted by our correspondent confirmed the number of casualty from the incident, adding that its officers were immediately dispatched to the scene after receiving information about the crash.
The FRSC sector commander who said the accident occurred because the truck was on excessive speed when it rammed into the tricycles added that investigation into the incident was still ongoing.
