Cross River NUJ: Islamic Cleric tasks journalists on patriotism
The Chief Imam of Eastern Naval Command, Central Mosque, Calabar, Lt. Commander Dawud Abdulhameed has called on the Journalists in Nigeria to set the agenda for peaceful co-existence and always imbibe the spirit of patriotism during their routine news gathering as the nation is prepared for the 2023 elections.
Journalists in the country have been advised to set the agenda for peaceful co-existence and imbibe the spirit of patriotism through their daily reportage, especially as Nigeria is set for the 2023 general elections.
The Chief Imam of Eastern Naval Command Central Mosque, Calabar, Lt. Commander Dawud Abdulhameed drop the massage on Friday during special prayers organised for Journalists as part of activities to mark the beginning of the 2022 NUJ Media Week shortly after the weekly Jummah Prayers.
Abdulhameed, who is also the Chairman of the Cross River State Council of Imams and Scholars, said,
“”The media must set the standard for a peaceful and united Nigeria by objective reportage, and also stimulate conscious political discourses that will strengthen the Unity of Nigeria””
The Islamic Scholar opined that “The socioeconomic and political development of Nigeria will be largely dependent on the critical role of the press, I, therefore, called on media practitioners to help the country achieve a successful transition in 2023″”
In his footnotes, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Cross River State Council, Comrade Nsa Gill, asserted the important role played by the media in nation-building.
Stressing that the leadership of the media will ensure Journalists play a pivotal role so that the government can achieve the set objective of conducting free, fair, and credible elections during the 2023 general elections in the country.
The chairman said, “We know the role played by the media toward nation-building on this note we will ensure that our members played a pivotal role so that the government can achieve the set objective of conducting free, fair, and credible elections to guarantee a successful transmission in 2023″”

Highlights of the event include prayers for the country, the leaders and the entire journalists. The program had the attendance of the NUJ EXCO members, Cross River State Council, and other members of the union.
The event which featured prayers for journalists and the nation at large was well attended by the leadership and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Cross River State Council.
