C’River LG Polls: CROSIEC Approves Youths for New Nigeria (YNN) as Official Election Observers
In a significant move toward promoting electoral transparency and civic engagement, the management board of the Cross River State Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) voted unanimously on Tuesday 30th October 2024 to approve Youth For New Nigeria (Cross River State Chapter) as official observers to monitor the upcoming Local Government Election Day on November 2nd.
Youth For New Nigeria (YNN), a grassroots service-based organization, will take on the role of nonpartisan observers to help ensure a fair and orderly voting process across polling locations in Ikom, Obubra and Etung Local Governments all within Cross River (state). This designation allows YNN members to monitor voting activities, verify proper procedures, and ensure compliance with election laws. This is the second time that the Cross River State Chapter of YNN has been authorized to participate in this capacity on Election Day in Cross River State. The first was during the 2020 Local Council elections in the State.
With a long-standing commitment to civic responsibility and community service, YNN has established itself as an advocate for integrity, equity, and active citizenship. The group’s election engagement this year aligns with its dedication to the patriotic values of accountability and justice. Members of the Cross River State Chapter (led by its State Coordinator, Comrade Eko Francis) have received guidelines to fulfill their roles responsibly, in compliance with the national and state guidelines, rules and regulations binding observers before, during and after an election process.
A Role Rooted in Transparency and Accountability:
As Accredited Observers, YNN members will maintain a presence at polling places to observe the voting process, report any discrepancies, and serve as advocates for transparency. Their work will include ensuring voter identification protocols are followed, monitoring the handling of ballots, and confirming adherence to proper procedures at voting stations. The organization’s involvement is particularly focused on enhancing public confidence in the electoral system and safeguarding against any potential irregularities.
Speaking to the Press, the YNN National Coordinator, Comrade Sunday Obanubi, expressed gratitude to the management board of the Cross River State Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) for granting YNN this opportunity to contribute to the election process.
“We are honored by this trust and excited to support a fair and secure election process in Cross River State,” said Mr. Obanubi. “Our members are committed to upholding democratic values, and we view this role as an extension of our patriotic dedication to the community and to nation building.”
Community Commitment Beyond Election Day:
In addition to their Election Day activities, the Cross River State chapter of YNN regularly participates in initiatives aimed at community building and empowerment. From educational programs to charitable outreach events, YNN has made its mark in Cross River State and Nigeria through service projects that promote goodwill, unity, and support for the underserved.
Their ongoing initiative, the “End of the Year Prison Outreach” program which is in partnership with well spirited individuals, exemplifies YNN’s emphasis on community engagement and empathy for the downtrodden. Through this project, the group wishes to raise funds to ensure that inmates at the Adim Correctional Facility (in Cross River State) can enjoy a memorable Christmas and New Year experience.
