Comgort Umanah hails from Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. She began her educational career from Annang Peoples’ School, Nto Obo/Eka Uruk Eshiet, from where she proceeded to Northern Annang Secondary Commercial School, Utu Etim Ekpo in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
On completion of her secondary school study, she proceeded in 1979 to the then Polytechnic Calabar where she bagged a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication. In 1993, she successfully enrolled for her Post Graduate Diploma in Communication Arts in University of Uyo. In 2005, she did her Masters’ Program in Communication Arts, Business and Organizational Communication.
Comfort Umanah began rendering service to her fatherland in 1983 during her one (1) year mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC), where she served at Umunoha Girls Secondary School, Mbaitoli in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State. Between 1985 and 1987, she worked as a News Reporter for Cross River Television Authority. In 1992, she was a Senior Reporter (News) in Akwa Ibom State Broadcasting Corporation – Television Service.
Ms. Umanah in 1995 served as the Principal Reporter (News) in Akwa Ibom State Broadcasting Corporation – Television Service. She then grew to become the Controller of News and Current Affairs between 1999 and 2001. Between 2001 and 2002, she worked as the Manager News and Current Affairs and between 2003 and 2009, she was the Deputy Director, News and Current Affairs in Akwa Ibom State Broadcasting Corporation – Television Service. Between 2010 and 2012, she worked as the Director of Production, News and Current Affairs and between 2013-2017, she was the Director of News and Current Affairs. Between April 2017 and January 2020, she served as the Director of Information in the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Information, while in 2020 she served as a member, Technical Committee of Akwa Ibom State Gender Policy.
Comfort has attended several courses, within and outside the country, and possesses a number of certificates to her credit. Some of these are: Certificate in Trade Union Education ILO/NLC (1989); Certificate in Trade Union Education CTUC/NLC (1991); Certificate in Train the Trainer International (Canadian Labour College CLC (1998); Special Class Compulsory Examination for Administrative and Professional Officers (2002); Leadership Development for Women – United State Department of State (2005); Public Administration – Administrative Staff College – ASCON (2012); Public Administration – Galilee International Management Institute – Israel (2014).
As a result of her dogged commitment and dedication to work, Ms. Comfort Umanah has held several positions of responsibility such as: Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalist AKBC TV Chapel (1987-1991); Treasurer, Nigeria Union of Journalist NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Council (1987-1991); National Ex-Officio Member, Nigeria Association of Women journalists NAWOJ (1989-1999); Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, Women’s Wing, Akwa Ibom State Council (1989-1999); Nigeria’s Sole Delegate Representative, 10th World Conference on the Problem of Working Women, Bulgaria (1989).
Comfort Umanan was also the Vice Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, Akwa Ibom State Council (1999-2003); Member, Nigeria Labour Congress Educators Forum; State Coordinator, Labour Writers Association of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Chapter (2000); Member, Nigeria Labour Congress Fact Finding Mission on Trade Union Education to ILO training Centre, Turin, Germany (2001); Vice Chairperson, South-South Nigeria Labour Congress, National Women Commission (2003-2007); Chairperson, Nigeria Labour Congress, State Women Committee, Akwa Ibom State (2003-2007). She is a 2005 alumna of Meridian International Centre, Washington DC, USA.
