Church Advocates Christian Principles As Measures To Combat Moral Decadence in Nigerian Schools
The Dean, Church of Nigeria Archbishop Ecclesiastical Province of Niger Delta Region, Most Rev Dr Blessing Enyindah has attributed the moral decadence in Nigeria’s education sector to the inability of government at all levels to maintain the high Christian principles introduced into the education system by the missionaries in the past.
Dr. Enyindah who doubles as the Bishop of Ikwere Diocese of the Church in Rivers State said this while addressing journalists after a two day provincial council meeting of the church held last Wednesday at Uyo Diocese.
The cleric linked the rise in social vices among Nigerian Schools to the lack of good Christian morals across levels of education, the absence of good parental control and the absence of sound Christian teachings in most new generation Churches as some of the problems confronting the education sector in the country.
To reclaim the lost glory, Most Rev Enyindah has urged government to support the Churches in their quest to restore sound morals teaching among school children, stressing that most churches today lack the capacity to fund education as was the case in the past.
According to him, the Anglican Communion as one of the pioneers amongst missionaries that introduced education, health care and agriculture to the Nigerian populace, have done their best to maintain a high standard of education amongst its missionary schools across Nigeria.
He called on members of the church to confront the current hardship brought to Nigerians through poor leadership with innovation in agriculture and entrepreneurship.
Collaborating the position of Dr Enyindah, the Bishop of Uyo Diocese, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Rt. Rev Owen Ukafia said some parents have relegated their responsibilities to the background, adding that most of them have failed to imbibe christian principles to their children.
He sited the case of a school boy, currently in Police Detention for threatening his mates with a gun as evidence of the many failures among public schools, while advocating for a synergy by all stakeholders to change the situation for the best.
Rt. Rev Ukafia said the Church is always ready to partner Government in the aspect of moulding God fearing children in the State and the nation at large.
