Trouble in Essien Udim, Akwa Ibom State, as hoodlums burn 1 police inspector to death, set police van ablaze
Residents of Ikpe Annang, Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State are now living in fear after hoodlums killed a policeman and set police van ablaze in a bloody clash in the area.
The victim, a police inspector, was burnt to death and three rifles stolen at Ikpe Annang Junction by hoodlums who have been terrorizing the area.
Van belongs to Quick Response Squad attached to Essien Udim was always stationed at Ikpe Annang Junction.
The incident is the latest of the reprisal attacks on the police over a renewed fight against insecurity in the area.
It would be recalled that hoodlums had attacked police station in the area twice, destroying properties and matcheting a police officer, leaving him unconscious for months.
Police decried spate of insecurity in Essien Udim and sought collaboration, intelligence from the locals to compliment efforts of the council Chairman, Mr Anthony Luke, in tackling insecurity in the area.
The police area commander, Mr Nasiru Bello, who visited the scene of the incident, lamented the continuous loss of fine police gentlemen to hoodlums in Akwa Ibom and called on members of the community to feed police with information to track down the bandits.
Meanwhile, the Councillor representing Ikpe Annang Ward, Hon Nsefi Peter Ekanem, has condemned the dastardly act, describing it as unfortunate.
Ekanem expressed worry over the growing incidents of attach on innocent citizens by hoodlums despite the efforts by the Local Government Chairman in curbing crime and criminalities in the area.
He wondered why people, for what ever reasons, should attack and kill police officers who were on duty to protect lives and property of the people instead of lending a helping hands to the police fight criminalities.
