Essien Udim inaugurates 7th Legislative Council as Mrs Mary Charles emerges first female Leader
The 7th Essien Udim Legislative Council has been inaugurated as Mrs Mary Reuben Charles emerged as the first female substantive Leader of the legislature.
Mrs Charles is a councillor representing Ukana West, Ward 1.
The inauguration which took place at Barrister Nsini Umoso Legislative Chambers, Essien Udim was done in line with the provision of the law which empowers the Chairman in council to issue a proclamation for the inauguration of the legislative council.
Also Mr Polycarp Umo representing Afaha Ward 1 was elected Deputy leader while Mr Bassey Etteyit emerged as the House Leader.
Other officers elected were Deputy House Leader, Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip.
Performing the inauguration, the Executive Chairman of Essien Udim Local Government Council, Mr Anthony Luke who promised to ensure a better working relationship between the executive and legislature said the welfare of the councillors will be given top priority in his administration.
He charged the legislatures to make by-laws that will meet the yearnings of the people and also bring development to the grassroots.
Mr Luke who described the inauguration of the seventh assembly as a mark of a new dawn in the area and the begining of new things to come to Essien Udim charged the councillors to live up to the expectations of the people of their Wards.
The Chairman called on conserted effort to move Essien Udim forward while expressing his readiness to transform the area and make it better than he met it.
Luke said that he is in a hurry to deliver dividends of democracy to his people tasked the councillors on hardwork and dedication to their duties.
He described Essien Udim as a land of prosperity added that he is poised to ensure that Essien Udim is great again.
The council boss who also made a facility tour of the council decried high level of dilapidation and non-maintenance of structures and facilities in the council.
He called for immediate replacement of broken tiles in some offices in the council and also ordered for immediate clearing of grasses which has since overgrown the buildings and habour dangerous animals.
