In Focus: Governor Otu’s 63 Independence Day Speech
In his 63rd Nigeria’s Independence anniversary speech, the Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Prince Bassey Otu, highlighted the challenging economic environment that the country is currently facing. He emphasized that this hostile economic climate is not unique to Nigeria but is also prevalent in other parts of the world.
Governor Otu stressed the importance of unity and solidarity among Nigerians to overcome the present economic crunch. He called on every patriotic citizen to exhibit patience, resilience, and love for their fatherland. These qualities, according to the governor, are essential for navigating through these tough times.
The governor’s speech reflects the reality of the economic situation in Nigeria. The country has been grappling with various economic challenges, including inflation, unemployment, and a decline in oil prices, which heavily impact the nation’s revenue. These issues have led to a decrease in the standard of living for many Nigerians and have created a sense of uncertainty about the future.
Governor Otu’s call for solidarity is crucial in times like these. Nigerians need to come together and support one another, both at the individual and national level. By standing united, the country can find innovative solutions to its economic problems and work towards a brighter future.
Patience and resilience are also vital qualities that every Nigerian should possess during these challenging times. Economic recoveries take time, and it is important not to lose hope or give in to despair. By remaining patient and resilient, individuals can weather the storm and contribute to the nation.
To reflect on Governor Otu’s speech the Governor said “We are not denying the fact that we live presently in a very hostile economic environment with our compatriots in other States of the Federation. The same or lesser of this unfriendly economic climate is also prevalent in other parts of the world”
“What is required of all is solidarity, patience, resilience, and love to collectively get our economy out of the woods. With our ideas put together will ultimately bring success to our present suffering. Let us take a step of faith by believing that this is achievable, and follow up with concrete actions”
“For the past six sixty-threes of our nation’s independence, we have been able to record some modest achievements in the political sphere. We have had twenty-four ears (still counting) of unbroken civilian democratic governance in the country”
“In the area of infrastructure and physical utilities, we have achieved much as well as stabilizing our socio-cultural endowments. Our healthcare delivery system has improved, while food security is a work in progress”
“To consolidate on these gains, I enjoin all of us to bridge the fault lines of ethnicity, crime, criminality, hate, and rancor. While the proverbial “good old days” are often filled with nostalgic feelings, I make bold to state that their favorable conditions were created by the unreported sacrifices and goodwill made by certain individuals or the entire citizenry to create the “Eldorado” we crave”
As we celebrate our 63rd year of independence, it is important to reflect on the achievements and progress made in various sectors of the country. Over the past six decades, Nigeria has witnessed significant milestones in politics, infrastructure, healthcare, and food security” the governor said.
One of the notable achievements is the uninterrupted civilian democratic governance that the country has experienced for the past 24 years. This is a testament to the growth and stability of Nigeria’s political system, as it demonstrates the country’s commitment to democracy and the rule of law.
In terms of infrastructure and physical utilities, Nigeria has made significant strides. The development of roads, bridges, airports, and other essential infrastructure has improved connectivity and facilitated economic growth. This has not only enhanced the quality of life for Nigerians but has also attracted foreign investment and boosted trade.
Furthermore, Nigeria has made efforts to stabilize its socio-cultural endowments. The healthcare delivery system has seen improvements, with increased access to quality healthcare services. However, there is still work to be done in this area to ensure that every Nigerian has access to affordable and efficient healthcare.
Food security has also been a priority for the country. Nigeria has taken steps to enhance agricultural productivity and reduce dependence on food imports. Initiatives such as the Anchor Borrowers Program and the Green Alternative have been implemented to support farmers and increase food production. While progress has been made, there is still a need for sustained efforts to achieve complete food security.
To build on these achievements, therefore, every Nigerian irrespective of tribe, religion, or political affiliation must put differences aside, and seek to support the government of the day to succeed.
Accordingly, our sacrifice of today will eventually take us to the Nigeria we dream to have tomorrow”
“I wish all of us a joyous 63rd independence celebration of our dear native land Nigeria.
May God bless Cross River State!
May His face shine upon Nigeria! The Governor concluded.
The high point of the event was the mass pass by selected schools, uniform organizations, the police, and the paramilitary.
