UNIUYO New VC: Prof Umoatan insists Senate followed due process
A Professor in the University of Uyo, Dorothy Umoatan, has insisted that due process was followed in the selection of the eight substantive Vice Chancellor of the University.
Recalled that some aggrieved members of the Senate of the University had petitioned the Governing Council over an alleged decision of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), Prof. Enefiok Essien, to manipulate the selection process of UNIUYO new VC, Prof Ndaeyo.
Prof Umoatan maintained that the process was properly guided by the relevant laws regarding the appointment of principal officers of federal universities, including the Universities Miscellaneous Provisions Law, comprising the Principal Act no 11 of 1993 and the subsequent amendments.
Prof. Dorothy Umoatan who is a Professor of Law and Director, Centre for Gender Studies, University of Uyo, congratulated Prof. Nyaudo Ndaeyo as the 8th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University and commended Prof. Enefiok Essien and the University management for ensuring excellence.
She further appreciated Prof. Essien for a peaceful administration, adding that he has been able to carry everyone along.
“It can be recalled that throughout the administration of Professor Enefiok Essien, students records zero riot; he has been able to create a peaceful academic environment for everybody to thrive.
“Although, sometimes there are internal problems within the relative stakeholders in the university community but his proactiveness in responding to these problems put him on the frame of a competent administrator, ” she stated.
She also disclosed that Professor Essien who is running the crest of his administration have been able to secure a permanent space for two faculties: Agriculture and Law, noting that this development has made his infrastructural strides remarkable.
Speaking about staff development, Prof Umoatan who was recently promoted to the cadre of a professor, described Professor Essien is a human resource manager.
According to her, “his commitment to staff promotion and ensuring that newly promoted professors deliver their inaugural lectures without delay makes him to top the chart in the history of the University.
In a similar way, Professor Umoatan who is a first female Professor of Law in Akwa Ibom State said she has been able to reach the apex in her career.
She said, “When you are working and you are committed to the work, you should have expectation.
“For me I have always been focused, I do not remember a level I have stayed for more than the required period of time for another promotion which is three years. So, my promotion is well deserved; it is a product of commitment to service, I can assess myself.”
However, she encouraged other staff who have not been able to meet the requirements to work up to it, adding that those who have met the requirements should have patience for their promotion.
