Ogoni Cleanup: FG flags off 6 water projects Ogoniland
As the people of Niger Delta continue to clamour for the total clean up of some parts of the Niger Delta badly affect by oil pollution, the Minister of Environment Mohammad Abubakar has flag off six water projects in Ogoni land.
The Minister said the six water project will create jobs for the teeming unemployed youths of the Niger Delta region.
Abubakar, made this known during the flag off ceremony on Monday, 22/3/2021 in Bori, khana local government area of Rivers State.
Since the Ogoni cleanup was flagged off in 2016, there have been agitations for the provision of portable water as one of the emergency measures recommended by the United Nations Environmental Program UNEP reports on the 4th of August 2011.
The Minister also reinterated the federal government’s commitment to the total clean up of the ogoni land.
The head operations hyprep, Prof Phillip shekwolo and a hyprep board member Celestine Akpobari, urged the contractors handling the water project to bring their expertise to bear on the sustainability of water when completed
The people of region said they will give their total support in ensuring that the water projects were actualized.
High point of the event was the handing over of contract agreement to the contractors
Recall that Ogoni land among the other oil producing communities was badly affected by the activities of oil companies operating in the area as oil spillage has wreaked havoc to the socio-economic life of the people.
As the people of Ogoni Kingdom continue to await the implementation of a multibillion naira Ogoni Cleanup contract signed by the Federal Government some years ago, it is expected that this remedial projects will provide a clean water source for the people of the area.
