Nigeria’s Democracy is a Scam – Bishop of Calabar Anglican Communion
The Bishop of Calabar Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Prof. Nneoyi Egbe says Nigeria’s democracy has been a scam right from 1999 when the country began the journey of democratic rule.
Bishop Egbe gave the assertion at the church auditorium on Monday 11th July 2022 during a World Press Conference with the journalists to mark the 2nd session of the Eleventh Synod of the Diocese.
The Clergy enumerated many reasons why the system is a scam to includes a lack of leadership trust, and blatant lies in every facet of governance by Nigerian leaders which have contributed to the monumental failure of the entire system.
Failure in the educational system, infrastructural rot, total collapse of the security system and economic crunch characterised by pilfering of public funds by the Nigerian leaders and the monster called corruption which is viewed as the main cankered worm that has eaten deep into the fabric of the Nigeria society.
On the state of the nation, the Bishop identifies several proofs of evidence that nothing has changed since the beginning of the present government in 2015.
“His words, “Several issues have trended the religious, political, social and economic landscapes of the Nigerian nation over the past year. There is clear evidence that nothing has changed for the better in the last seven years despite the hue and cry across the nation.
He said instead, “Nigeria is progressively fallen lower and lower and currently appear to be rolling downhill under very high acceleration” stressing that what always comes into our minds Is that we become acclimatised to the lies we have told ourselves for so long that every further step we take is a comedy. Stressing that “Our institutions are built on these lies which is why we cannot fight corruption that has bedevilled the country for so long”
He further maintained that the problem Nigeria is facing today is a result of a faulty constitution.
He said, “It is common knowledge that the Constitution we are operating as a nation does not reflect the truth in Nigeria.
The antecedent of our national leadership has shown that they have a bias toward a particular religion and people. The National Academy and all stakeholders in the Nigerian project must stop the charade of a constitutional amendment and be honest with the citizens of this country” the Clergy said.
Earlier in the conference, the Bishop welcome the participants to the second session of the Eleventh Synod of the Diocese of Calabar which is billed to take place from the 13th to 17th of July 2022 at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Ikom.

Visitation of other Anglican Churches to assess conditions and status as well as assisting our churches with the scarce resources at our disposal. Opening of four new. Churches have identified 180 locations for the mission. Discipleship and church planting visitations.
Improvement of the welfare conditions among our people, members and clergy.
On the improvement of security in the state, the clergyman commended the state governor, Prof. Been Ayade on the improvement of security operations in the state and appealed to the government not to rest on her oars maintaining fighting against insecurity in the state.
On the intercommunal clashes in the state, Bishop Egbe called on the warring communities to sheath their swords and work for peace.
He said, “We wish to appeal to all well-meaning residents and citizens of Cross River State to sheath their swords and work for peace. We recommend that where these squabbles arise from land disputes, the state government should annex such areas bordering disputing communities as buffer zones, and develop them into state-owned, educational, or economic ventures with a mandate to the communities to protect the facility” the clergy stressed.
