Nsit Ubium Local Government Area could be thrown into crisis following what many described as over ambitious personalities in the area who are out to truncate the zoning arrangement in the area.
It can be recalled that in 2017, PDP Caucus in Nsit Ubium unanimously agreed that, at the expiration of the current Chairmanship position in 2020 as it is currently held by Hon. Udemeobong Sylvanus from Nsit Zone, that the next Zone to take their turn will be Ubium South.
It was gathered, the current chairman, Hon. Udemeobong Sylvanus from Nsit Zone took over from Hon. Ekpedeme Amos from Ubium North whose predecessor was Hon. Chris Ekpo from Nsit Zone.
It was gathered that now that it is the turn of Ubium South ambitious politicians from Nsit Zone are attempting to truncate the zoning arrangement by demanding to retain the Chairmanship position for a second term.
Findings showed that no Zone in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area had ever done a two term on Chairmanship on an elected basis.
“It is even annoying that, this same set of politicians who were present when the unanimous decision was taken in 2017 that Ubium South will take their turn come 2020 are pushing to scuttle the agreement of 2017,” one of the politicians said.
Morenews gathered that the people of Nsit Zone are predicating their demands on the basis that if they let go of Chairmanship position, that Nsit Zone will be devoid of any elected position.
“We are at this point forced to take them a little bit back on memory lane: LGA Chairman
Hon. Chris Ekpo, 2008-2011, Nsit Zone, Local Government Chairman (Transition); Mrs. Xavier Thompson (Transition) 2011-2012, Nsit Zone; House of Assembly: Rt. Hon Onofiok Luke, 2011-2019, Nsit Zone; SSG: Umana Okon Umana, 2007 – 2014, Nsit Zone; PDP Chapter Chairman, Akparawa Inyang Anyang, 2007-2015, Nsit Zone.
“Looking at the above offices and their holders, we can see clearly that, not in the too distant past, Nsit Zone had held, at the same time, all the major political offices in Nsit Ubium.
“We cannot remember anyone from other Zones complaining as at this time and we cannot also remember anyone from Nsit Zone pointing this out as at then.
“Attempting to scuttle an existing agreement on the basis of flimsy excuse is being clever by half.
“Arguing too that, House of Assembly and Chairmanship cannot be in the same Zone, is a failure in elementary mathematics and also an attempt at misleading those outside of Nsit Ubium, as House of Assembly is presently in Ubium North.
“These two different elected offices do not have the same tenure. One is four years and another is three years, therefore at some point, the two offices will meet themselves in one Zone.
After all, this happened in the past, and Nsit Zone was the first beneficiary.
“We are therefore appealing to our brothers from Nsit Zone to let peace be and honour the agreement of 2017 on Chairmanship zoning, as this is necessary to avoid any breakdown of law and order in Nsit Ubium LGA,” a statement from the aggrieved party reads.
