Under-performance: CLO, media put Akwa Ibom government on its toes
-As CLO Parleys journalists on burning State issues
Worried by some burning issues in Akwa Ibom State and a near- below-par performance of the state government, the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Akwa Ibom State Branch and the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), have partnered each other to stir government to be alert to its responsibility.
Rising from a media parley in Uyo the Civil Liberties Organization raised some worrying issues affecting the people including the worsening security situation in the state.
A statement issued at the end of the parley and signed
the State Chairman of Civil Liberties Organization,
Otuekong Franklyn Isong, the Organisation tasked the state government on prioritising projects and paying more ussual attention to the “low hanging fruits”.
“CLO raises the alarm that the Automobile Assembling Plant in Ikot Ukab, Itu Local Government Area is winding down as over 100 workers of the company handling the project were sacked by the Company at the last week.
“CLO expresses concern over the increasing crime rate in Akwa Ibom State particularly, Uyo metropolis lately.
“Civil Liberties Organization calls on State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, to provide more logistics supports to the Nigerian Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, particularly more patrol vehicles.
“CLO commends the State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, for ensuring a smooth transition from one democratically elected Local Government Council to another as provided for in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
“CLO calls on the outgone 31 local government council chairmen to publish the list of projects they executed during their 3 years administration, urging the newly sworn-in 31 local government chairmen to be accessible to their people; to reside within their local government areas; and to provide development to their people.
“Civil Liberties Organization calls on the 26 members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to show their constituents the 2019 Constituency Projects as captured in the 2019 Accountant General’s Report.
“CLO calls on the State government to prioritise projects, and pay more attention to what it called “low hanging fruits”, as well as endeavour to complete and commission all road projects including the flyover ptoject at Ikot Oku Ikono junction initiated by the administration.
“Civil Liberties Organization advises the State government to suspend further spending of tax payers money on the International Worship Centre project but, to instead use such funds for people-oriented projects, such as completion of several ongoing road construction projects and provision of more patrol vehicles to the Police in order to check the rising crime wave in the State,” the statement read.
