ASUU Strike: UNIUYO students seek for jobs as escape route
Following the eight weeks extension of the current strike action embarked upon by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), some students of the University of Uyo, UNIUYO, have disclosed that they would seek for jobs in the labour market to keep them away from indulging into any thing that could adversely impact on their lives while the strike lasts.
The students, who made the disclosure in a chat with our reporter in Uyo, regretted that the extension of the strike by ASUU owning to the federal government’s refusal to accede to the union’s request had left them with no choice than to seek for jobs.
Abasiofon Peter, while baring his mind on the situation, said she would go into trading as soon as a little capital would be available for the intended business.
According to her, “ I think I would go into the business world because I had learnt a trade before now. So, I would raise finance and then use this opportunity to make sure I start up the business so as to make use of the time.
“students come to school because they feel they need to be in school and also have a particular passion in mind. I think this is an opportunity for them to pursue that particular dream. It might be a little time, but just take a step, and of course, it will be a great opportunity and this would make you feel so much love and believe in yourself that you have finally gotten what you wanted”, she advised.
Another student, Blessing Daniel of the Department of Communication Arts, UNIUYO, said she was making plans to seek for a job and also acquire a skill that would help her become better and self-reliant, while advising other students to think in this direction to better their lots.
The 300 level student said although the strike would avail her of so many opportunities to discover herself, the negative side, according to her, would be that her years in the university will be extended, a delay she blamed on the federal government.
The Communication Arts students therefore, advised other students to engage themselves in meaning ventures, reasoning that the eight weeks extension could be used to achieve a lot of self-development.
“l would say, students should go out there and look for a job or do something, because these few weeks are enough for one to increase one’s intellect. It could be learning a skill or working.”, she advised.
Speaking, some other students however were different in their views when they said they would rather use the period of stay-at -home to study their books preparatory to the time universities would reopen for academic activities.
A 400 level student of the Department of Geo-informatics and Surveying, Ime Akaninyene told our intern that the extension had given him enough time study and to also revise.
He said: “The positive impact the strike as had on me is that it gives me enough time to to get myself prepared by studying, doing revision into what I have been taught”.
Akaninyene therefore, advised the students that instead of staying in school and doing nothing, they should go back to their respective homes, expressing the hope that their parents might look for something to engage them.
A 300 level student of the Department of Human Anatomy, Ola Daniel said the strike meant nothing to him as he would focus on his internship programme currently running.
“This is like a 2022 golden opportunity for me to expand my knowledge on content writing because I am a developing content writer,I will utilize this time to go for more classes and build myself”, the UNIUYO student disclosed.
