Akwa Ibom teachers trained on tropical disease control
In a bid to intensify effort towards the control and elimination of worms, the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Control and Elimination Programme of the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health in collaboration with Helen Keller International organized a one day training programme for both public and private schools’ teachers in Akwa Ibom State.
The exercise was to deworm and also promote good health among students and pupils between the ages of 5-14 years in both public and private secondary and primary schools in the state.
The theme of the programme was “Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis.”
According to the organisers, distribution of Mebendazole (MEB) will commence on Monday, 20th to Wednesday, 24th, June 2022 in all Secondary and Primary Schools in the State.
Teachers were trained on how to administer accurate dose of Mebendazole (MEB) to students, School based treatment register, School summary form, chatting of personal data’s after Medicine Administration and to Identify Signs and symptoms(MAM) of (NTD)s
In order to ensure that a large number of students participate in the exercise, NTDs vocal person said teachers are the best candidate for the Community Drug Distributions in Schools.
The training was also to enlighten teachers on some of the commonest disease associated from Neglected Tropical Disease (NTDs) which includes Elephantiasis, Hydrocoeles, Filariasis, Lymphatic among others.
The event which took place at Ibeno Local Government Headquarters was attended by the various stake-holders from different partners organisation including Ministry of Health, Local Government health officers among others.
High point of the training was the distribution of materials to teachers and Mebendazole (MEB) to School representatives.
Secondary Grammar School Upenkang Ibeno which is the most populated school in the local Government received Fifteen (15) Bottles of Mebendazole=MEB for Three Thousand Students (3,000).
