Teachers in Akwa Ibom have expressed gratitude to President Muhamadu Buhari for his recent pronouncement for the upward review of salary scale and retirement age of teachers from 35 to 40 years.
The chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Etim Ukpong who made known the feelings of the teachers in the state in a telephone interview with reporters said they were very happy and grateful to the president.
Ukpong said the gesture by the president was an indication that the country appreciates teachers and sees them as those making very impoTertant contribution to the development of the society.
He expressed hope that the state government will queue into the laudable position of the Federal Government and equally implement the policies.
The pronouncement according to him was in response to their request for the bill on upward review of retirement age of teachers to be converted to an act sent to National Assembly which was passed and sent to the president for assent.
Commenting on the outcome of the pronouncement, the NUT boss in the state said, “like basic principles of personnel management applies, when workers are happy, they give of their best”
He said, “the commitment level of of teachers is certainly going to rise, effectiveness and efficiency level is equally going to rise and the teachers will work with the hope that the country appreciates them”
Ukpong, who said teachers in the state received the news of the pronouncement by the president with great excitement, added that they were happy, saying it will optimise their performance level.
