Akwa Ibom State Government tasks newly employed teachers on improved Education Standard
Newly recruited Secondary School Teachers in Akwa Ibom State have been urged to offer services that will help in contributing to positive changes in the educational sector.
The State Head of Civil Service, Elder Effiong Essien gave this charge during the three days orientation workshop organized for newly recruited teachers by the State Secondary Education Board.
The workshop which has as its theme “reinvigorating the secondary school system for effective service delivery in Akwa Ibom State”, took place at the Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio, Uyo.
Elder Effiong Essien urged the new recruits to seize the rare opportunity with both hands by cultivating the virtues of diligence in service, respect for constituted authority and keep to the rules of engagement while being guided by the tenets of transparency, accountability, equity and good conscience.
Stating that the State government is also committed to the welfare of the Teachers, the Head of Civil Service said, “government on her part will continue to ensure that your welfare is given priority attention at all times, while exposing them to some training opportunities as funds available, hoping that they will make themselves available to be mentored for self-development”.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Idongesit Etiebet who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Rose Bassey said the workshop is necessary as it will give them a smooth entry into the teaching profession and integrate them into the public service while serving as a means to reinforce State government resolve to build competent teachers to help the State attain excellence in the education sector.
She emphasized that Government intends to apply the carrot and stick approach by rewarding distinguished personnel and disciplining those who err or are caught in any form of misconduct.
Earlier in her welcoming speech, the Chairman, State Secondary Education Board, Dr Ekaette Okon who challenged the newly recruited teachers to contribute their best to the sector note that “as teachers, we are as good as the quality of students produced” and therefore, urge them “to strive for positive changes for the State as the state government is interested in changing the narratives of the educational sector through various investments into the system””.
Dr Okon said that government is also interested in maintaining the 85percent benchmark in WAEC, NECO and NABTEB, reason the teachers must give their best.
Goodwill messages were received from the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEC), Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) while resource Persons addressed the new teachers on different issues.
