‘Act like champions, don’t challenge underdogs’- Abasieyo charges PDP supporters
Spokesperson of the Umo Eno/Akon Eyakenyi Campaign Council, Prince Chris Abasieyo, has advised members and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State to lead issue based campaigns and desist from attacking persons.
Prince Abasieyo, who said this on Peace Voice, a radio programme sponsored by the Maintain Peace Movement (MPM) on Inspiration FM, Uyo, described the PDP as a champion, saying that its members and supporters do not need to biker with other political parties.
Fielding questions from host of the programme, Mr. Ekomobong Peter, Abasieyo said that it was only in the nature of “underdogs” to challenge champions.
“In competitive sporting engagements such as boxing and wrestling, champions won’t challenge the underdogs. The underdogs will only challenge the champions so that they can rise into championship. The PDP is the champion and there is no way we can challenge the smaller arrangements.
“So the smaller arrangements will try to challenge to distract us from our training. That is why we are telling our supporters ‘don’t challenge the underdogs, you are the champion.’ It is in the nature of those coming to championship to challenge, not the champions challenging those looking up to becoming champions,” he said.
The spokesperson said instead of attacking persons during the campaigns, the PDP would opt for persuasive measures to win votes from the people of the state.
His words: “Such engagement doesn’t win elections. Persuasive savvy is what is needed, not combative approach. How do you get something from someone you are planning to attack? We need votes from the people. There is no way they are going to give votes to violent people.”
Abasieyo, a former State Commissioner for Information, who said that tourism development should not be left only in the hands of political appointees, maintained that Pastor Eno will create a tourism commission where persons identified to be talented in that area would man.
He further said that local government areas would be encouraged to set up at least three tourism sites, a measure he said would also go a long way in strengthening security in the state.
“”The challenge about tourism development is leaving it in the hands of political appointees. Government under Umo Eno will go steps further to ensure that the tourism commission is put in place to run tourism affairs outside the influence of political appointees from the ministry of tourism.
