Our youths must be accorded due attention before the unimaginable
It is quite unfortunate how we manage to get to where we are today in our nation, Nigeria. What a country? With estimated population of about two hundred million plus, out of which, the youth population is about 75 percent. What a whooping figure. One can imagine the percentage of votes this particular segment of Nigerian population gave to the present Nigerian government during the last elections, yet the youths are the most neglected and marginalized in this government.
Going by such a large population of Nigerian youths, it has been estimated that, about 60 percent of Nigeria’s youth population is either unemployed or underemployed, a situation that has posed great danger to our society, in terms of crimes and all sorts of social vices. Yet, we are seeking for a soothsayer to tell us what is happening in our nation presently.
Sadly, our young people are facing dual crisis of unemployment and insecurity. And we wonder why this large population of unemployed and unengaged and angry and unproductive youths, full of youthful energy, will not constitute a menace and security risk in our nation, as their lives appear hopeless.
However, it is disheartening that, finding, of late, has suggested that, unemployment rate in Nigeria has taken a shocking increase. Thus, there is undisputable evidence that unemployment rate is undoubtedly contributing to the current high wave of insecurity and violence in our country presently. Let us not give a false appearance please.
As a matter of fact, our country has never for once had it so bad, for over five years now, in terms of insecurity and criminality. This is so worrisome because insecurity, which has further crippled our economic development is perpetrated by our young people. Thus, who do we blame?
Therefore, as concerned citizens of this country, we hereby call for a comprehensive multi-dimensional plan of action to address the problems of our youths in this nation, especially youth unemployment, before its associated consequences become unmanageable and consume our society, while we apportion blame to things that are irrelevant.
Our youths should be accorded with due consideration and attention by a government which they had staked their lives for, especially during the last elections. Quite profoundly, our youths should be properly trained to possess skills which are congruent with real labour market demands.
Thus, if this present government will ever listen to this call, and righteously meet the demand as stated above, then this will eventually, help in creating job opportunities, such that will make our youths to become productive assets to our nation.
And by so doing, our youths will take their place in the mainstream of our nation’s development by offering the best of their skills and talents rather than getting themselves involved in violence and criminality and assorted social vices.
