…As Governor Emmanuel addressed protesters
As Nigerians across the country continue to agitate for a better police force, the protest in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Capital yesterday was historic as protesters rejected attempt by the Governor Emmanuel to bribe them with four million naira.
Report has it that Governor Emmanuel who stopped by to address the protesters allegedly offered the youths the sum of ₦4,000,000 to stop the protest in the state but the youths rejected the money.
Morenews gathered that immediately the governor’s car pulled off the protesters started chanting “Yahoo boy” “Yahoo boy”.
The embarrassing video of the chanting is trending and has generated commentaries in the social media since yesterday.
The protest which started in Akwa Ibom on Tuesday for the first time since the end SARS protested two weeks ago.
Protesters numbering over hundreds occupied the city center of Uyo, popularly known as Ibom Plaza and moved through Wellington Bassey Way leading to government house.
Immediately the protesters got to the government house gate, report has it that the governor who was returning from a trip stopped by and addressed the protesters.
Governor Emmanuel who commended President Buhari and the Inspector General of Police for listening to the agitations of Nigerians and disbanded SARS.
The governor stated that he is in support of a reformed police force and also advocated community policing.
One of the protesters who spoke with Morenews said, “The governor of Akwa Ibom thought he could buy us with the people’s money.
“His attempt to bribe us (protesters) showed that the governor does not care for the well fare and security of his people.
“We are not beggers and the purpose of the protest is not to make money. We are young people who are doing well in callings.
“All we need is to enjoy our freedom of movement as citizens not to be treated as outcast in our land by police men.
“We want better well fare for our police officers so that we can hold them accountable when they misbave. We want a better police force as it is in other climes. We want a police force we can call our friends.”
