Gov. Otu set to transform Calabar Stadium Hostel into Sports Resorts
Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, on Tuesday led the groundbreaking ceremony for the conversion of U. J. Esuene Stadium Hostel into the Calabar Sports Resorts and Leisure Hotel, saying the state is commitment to becoming a sports hub.
In his address at the event, Governor Otu identity Cross River’s illustrious sports legacy, hailing past sporting heroes who brought honor to the state on the international stage.
He stressed the significance of redefining sports in Cross River from mere leisure activities to lucrative ventures that can drive economic growth and empowerment.
Governor Otu lay emphasis on his administration’s readiness to engage in mutually beneficial partnerships with the private sector to enhance sports infrastructure and align with the government’s sports development agenda for the state.
Commissioner for Sports Development, Mrs. Agnes Atsu, expressed optimism about elevating Cross River to a prominent position in the sports realm, emphasizing the state’s desire to host global events and showcase its talented athletes.
Reflecting on the progress made since Governor Otu assumed office in May 2023, Mrs. Atsu lauded the administration’s commitment to sports development, citing the remarkable achievements in sporting activities within a short period.
The Commissioner also noted that, increase in medals won by Cross River athletes, signaling a resurgence in the state’s sporting prowess.
Mr. Sanjay Oscar, the appointed consultant for the project, stresses the essence of providing top-notch accommodation for athletes during sporting events.
He further outlined the plans for the International Sports Hotels and Resort, a 72-room facility with a capacity for 400 individuals, which aims to enhance the state’s ability to host major sporting competitions.
Acknowledging the government’s dedication to sports development, Alh. Usman Bashir of Square Builder Concepts Nigeria Limited commended the collaboration with Cross River State on the project.
Assuring that the renovation work would be completed by December 2024, just in time for the state’s renowned Carnival Calabar and Festival, thereby positioning Cross River as a premier sports destination.
