Gully erosion wrecks havoc in Uyo as communities count loses
Communities and residents in some parts of Uyo metropolis are counting their loses as gully erosion wrecks havoc to their source of livelihood.
Our Environment reporter who visited the affected areas observed that the people are living in real danger as the gully erosion has threatened their residential buildings and farm lands.
Some residents who spoke with our reporter cried out to government to intervene by saving them from the rampaging effect of the erosion menace.
They said that they have loss property worth millions of naira to the gully erosion over the years.
Some victims whose houses had already been submerged have relocated to a safer area while others who do not have anywhere to relocate to live at the mercy of God.
Areas mostly affected by the gully erosion include Udo-Iwang, Ikpa road, Asutan, Etim Umanna road and Afaha Oku Communities.
Investigation revealed that every household pay between ₦15,000 and ₦20,000 to divert heavy flood water into the ravine which could cause them more impending disaster before the 2020 rainy season is over.
Some residents who narrated their ordeal said the erosion menace started three months ago due to climate change and it has destroyed many houses and render most families homeless.
Speaking further, a retired banker who uses all her retirement benefits to start up a school that is servicing the whole community lamented that the incidents has also made life very difficult for her as there is no access road to the school due to the erosion manace.
Residents of Udo-Iwang, Ikpa road, Asutan, Etim Umanna road and Afaha Oku Communities to come to their aid by providing some palliatives measures to them to ameriorate their suffering.
