Bonny Kingdom attack: Group demands total overhaul of security architecture

Following renewed nefarious activities of suspected pirates, cult gang groups and drug barons in Bonny Kingdom of Rivers State, a group, The Concerned Citizens of Bonny, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Usman Baba Alkali, and the Commissioner of Police in the state to effect a complete overhaul of the security architecture in the kingdom, even as it passes a vote of no confidence on security chiefs operating in the area.
According to the group, the people of Bonny Kingdom are now wondering whether or not the Nigeria Police, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Navy in the waterways and other security agencies are living up to their expectations, giving their alleged romance with known cult groups, criminals and drug barons operating in Bonny kingdom.
Spokesperson for the group, Senebo Emmanuel Abbey, told our correspondent on Tuesday that the Bonny people have noticed that the Nigeria Police including officers in Finima police station and drug law enforcement officers are not doing their jobs effectively in Bonny kingdom.
Abbey said: “I can tell you sincerely that security officials in Bonny kingdom are not doing their job effectively, rather they’re collecting kickbacks from criminals and shielding them from arrest to the detriment of our people.
“As at today, security officers are not working as they should in Bonny kingdom. They don’t go out for arrests, and they cannot arrest a cult boy or drug baron because they’re familiar with them. Again, there are drug sites which also serve as dens for criminals littered everywhere in Bonny Kingdom.
“We think that the security chiefs and their officers in Bonny Kingdom are entirely corrupt. Our people want all of them pulled out of Bonny, and let the Inspector General of Police deploy competent officers that will tackle crime and criminality in Bonny kingdom without fear or favour”.
Abbey also observed that the police and the drug law enforcement agents do not have officers who would give intelligence on happenings in the kingdom, insisting that officers in the Criminal Investigation Department are not working as expected by the people, and as such should be replaced with committed and intelligent officers who will not compromise the already precarious security situation in the area.
“The Bonny kingdom is asking for a change of security officers. We want fresh police and security officers deployed to this kingdom so that we can sleep with our eyes closed, and survive with our families from the nocturnal activities of unknown gun men”, he said.
